Integrating learning and assessment – a practical guide

Sometimes it may seem that English teachers have two separate missions: 1) to teach English and 2) to prepare students for exams. Within the usual challenges that we face: large classes, mixed abilities and time limitations, that dual goal sometimes feels overwhelming. This presentation examines how we can marry the two. We’ll explore how classroom practice can best support exam preparation, by identifying individual students’ progress and areas to improve on, so that they can focus on what is needed, but most importantly see their strengths and gain confidence and self-belief. Ways of exploiting course book tasks will be examined, so that these strategies can easily be taken into your classes. We will consider how learning English in exam preparation classes can and should be personalised and motivating and even fun.
